19th Century Chinese (Canton) export embroidery in silk thread. Export embroidery was typically set against a black background to serve as a foil to the colours and textures of the silk threads and stitching. This panel features two noble figures seemingly conversing about an exotic blue bird held by one of them. An attending child-servant tilts a large umbrella over the principal figures, providing shade. The clothing of the figures is luxurious and elaborate, as is the feather-topped umbrella. A flowering bush or tree completes the scene. This fanciful narrative and Chinoiserie design was tailored to meet Western tastes in the period.
