11602

19th century scent bottle modelled as a seated Chinese/chinoiserie figure sitting cross-legged on a tasselled cushion, holding a set of musical pipes, and topped with a removable head serving as the stopper. This is a recognized subject by the French ceramicist, Jacob Petit (1796-1865). This piece dates from around 1840. Petit established a porcelain factory near Fontainebleau around 1830. Orientalist and chinoiserie figures were in vogue in the period, and Petit is known for his quirky interpretations with gilded scent bottles like this one being something of a specialty.
