An 18th Century pair of Irish stone carved Medici Lions. The original marble Medici Lions comprised one sculpture of a lion dating to the 2nd century AD that was later paired with another sculputure created in the late 16th century as a pendant, both to form a pair for the ornamentation of the Villa Medici in Rome at that time. The design greatly appealed to Ireland’s Georgian-era nobility and gentry, and by the 18th century Irish sculptors and the finest stone masons produced similarly styled lions to provide architectural features for the landscaped gardens of the elite.
This particular pair of Medici Lions is finely carved and in excellent condition, displaying light but attractive weathering concurrent age.
