18th Century pair of recumbent stone carved lions on attached plinths. Circa 1760. Possibly made of Glenarm stone originating from Northern Ireland.
After Antonio Canova, who originally carved the lions for the tomb of Pope Clement XIII in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Placed on the pontifical monument as a symbol of weight and determination of the successor of Saint Peter, as one is dozing and the other is on the lookout.
