Early 19-century pair of tall carved pine caryatid pilasters in the Baroque manner. Each is crowned by a stepped, shaped cornice surmounting carved scrolled volutes flanking a central furled acanthus leaf. This section crowns the head and bust of a female figure.flanked by drapery that tapers into a long, finely reeded shaft. This terminates in a stepped plinth featuring carved upright acanthus leaves. Reputedly from a grand house in provincial Ireland, the work is possibly that of a skilled local joiner or carver inspired to adapt a design from a pattern-book engraving. As expected with hand carving, the pilasters are very similar but not identical, which is evident in the distinctive expressions of each female face. These pilasters were designed as architectural showpieces, possibly used to frame a doorcase, an alcove, bookshelves, a chimney piece, or a pier glass
