19th Century painting titled ‘Fresh Breeze Off the South Foreland’ by Thomas Rose Miles (1869-1888). The painting depicts a lugger heeling over in a strong wind, off the South Foreland, an area of chalk cliffs on the Kent coast which overlooks the Straits of Dover. Although Thomas Rose Miles painted primarily in the late nineteenth century, the age of steamships, manu of his canvases depict vessels under sail, particularly trawlers. He often painted ships in danger, battling through rough seas, sometimes with lifeboats going to the aid of stricken vessels. Many of Miles’ scenes are set in English coastal waters, such as Sheerness, Southend, Whitby and Gorleston Harbour, but he also painted coastal views of Galway and Mayo, including Killary Bay and Clew Bay. In London, he exhibited with the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists, and the Arthur Tooth Gallery. Although Miles painted many Irish scenes, when he exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy in the late 1890’s.
