19^th Century oil on canvas titled 'Off the coast' by Walter Williams (1835-1906). Williams debuted his work at the Royal Academy in 1854, subsequently exhibiting works at other prestigious institutions in England and Ireland such as the Royal Hibernian Academy and the Manchester City Art Gallery. In this painting, the artist presents a dramatic seascape in the foreground of which fishermen are struggling valiantly to keep their small craft from overturning in rough seas. The location is not specified but the nautical conditions represented would have been familiar to seafarers throughout Britain and Ireland.
