19th Century oil on canvas by Charles Tattershall Dodd (1815-1878). The peaceful rural scene, depicting a hind gently directing his bovine charges to water, contrasts with the increasingly industrial appearance of urban locations in Victorian England. Dodd lived in Tunbridge Wells for most of his life and was the town’s foremost artist in the period. His work was exhibited at the British Institution and The Royal Academy. This canvas bears an inscription at the back stating that is was displayed at the Royal Academy Exhibition in 1851.
