19th Century beechwood correctional chair with intricately carved backrest featuring turned vertical spindles, stiles and finials, with elegant shell-carved crest and bead detailing. With an oval woven cane seat supported by turned legs terminating on splayed feet. C. 1840.
Correctional chairs were originally conceived by 18th century surgeon and anatomist, Sir Astley Paston Cooper, to correct the posture of slouching children. The shallow seat and high back, with vertical posts added at calculated intervals would encourage a child to sit ‘correctly’.
