11587

Early 19th century mahogany metamorphic desk in the manner of Gillows that transforms into a card table. This elegant piece of furniture resembles a bonheur du jour, with a raised section containing a set of drawers designed originally to cater to the writing requirements of ladies. This piece differs from a classic bonheur du jour in that the raised section is easily lifted from the base by a curved handle. The table top then extends outwards to reveal a green baize covered surface suitable for playing card games. Unusually, there are four brass-knobbed extendable supports for the card table top, two to the front and two to the rear of the desk. Both the removable upper section and the table, which feature delicate boxwood stringing, sit upon four slender turned and reeded legs terminating in original brass castors.
