19th century British toleware coal scuttle of octagonal form sits on four wheels and has its original liner. British made Toleware of this period, created in imitation of Asian lacquered wares, describes items made of tin that are generally painted black and embellished with designs in giltwork to which several coats of varnish are applied resulting in a decorative and rust-resistant surface. The hinged top and sides of the scuttle are decorated with birds and floral motifs.
