19th Century pair of small bronze busts on marble plinths. The subjects are the French Enlightenment figures Voltaire and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Objets de vertu like these were popular purchases for gentlemen making the Grand Tour from the late seventeenth to the early 19th century. Neoclassical in style, they emphasised gentlemanly interest in both Classical Antiquity and modern philosophy.
