William Shakespeare (1564-1616). Shakespeare was an English poet, playwright and actor, often referred to as England’s national poet and the ‘Bard of Avon’. He is regarded as both the most seminal writer in the English language and the world’s pre-eminent dramatist. His extant collection of works including collaborations consist of approximately 39 plays, 154 sonnets and 2 long narrative poems. Shakespeare’s plays have been translated into more than 100 languages and are performed more frequently than those of any other playwright.
