11607
19th century oil on canvas by an anonymous artist, probably Continental but possibly British or Irish, after a famous painting held in the Louvre by Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725-1805) titled ‘La Cruche Cassee’ (The Broken Jug) (c. 1771/1772). The Greuze original is widely recognized as symbolizing lost virginity as indicated by the broken jug. This later version of the subject shows a girl whose garments are not in disarray, as in the original, nor does she have a troubled expression. Rather, we see a pretty young woman smiling shyly with an apron full of flowers. Standing in a classical setting with a panther beside her, this figure is all the more attractive for appearing untroubled. Housed within a giltwood frame.
