Item Description

19th Century Bronze after the sculpture by Edmé Dumont (1722–1775) that secured his admission to the French Royal Academy in 1768. The original sculpture is at the Louvre. The subject, Milo of Croton, was famed in Ancient Greece as a superb sportsman. The apocryphal tale of his demise is partially illustrated here: Milo, wishing to test his strength, attempts to split a tree trunk, but his hand becomes caught. Unable to free himself he is devoured by wolves.
