Item Description

19th Century large barometer made in London by Thomas Rubergall, who was the Queen Victoria's optician. The face of the barometer features engraving reading ‘Tho(s) Rubergall, Optician to the Queen, 24 Coventry Street, London'. Held in a shaped satinwood case. C. 1850.

Rubergall, also known as “Optician to the Majesties”, was on appointment to Queen Victoria, Duke of Clarence and William IV. Aside from primarily being an optician, he also made and sold all types of optical and scientific instruments. He worked in London at 24 Coventry St. from 1840 to 1854.
