Item Description

Pair early 19th Century Blue John cassolettes with ormolu mounts each with an ovoid body applied with decorative mounts and scrolling foliate handles, beneath a removable cover topped with foliate finials. The pair sit on a waisted laurel decorated socle raised on a square plinth base.

Blue John (also known as Derbyshire Spar) is a semi-precious mineral, a rare form of fluorite
with bands of a purple-blue or yellowish colour.
