Pair 19th Century George IV Tatham Hall benches with simple planked seats, turned baluster ends, and sitting on turned tapering legs. Circa 1830.
The style of these benches is derived from Charles Heathcote Tatham’s influential publication Etchings Representing the Best Examples of Ancient Ornamental Architecture (1799). Between 1794 and 1796 Tatham, a cabinet maker, sponsored the architect Henry Holland, to travel to Italy to study and document classical remains including architectural friezes, altarpieces, and reliefs.
