10912 - Late 18th Century Sandstone Bust in Classical Greco-Roman DressItem Categories: New In Dublin, Sculpture
Item DescriptionLate 18th Century neo-classical style hand-carved sandstone bust of a lady in classical Greco-Roman dress. Possibly a depiction of Daphne who was a Naiad nymph in Greek mythology; naiads were minor goddesses associated with fountains, wells, springs, and other types of freshwater bodies. She was the daughter of the river god Peneus and the first love of sun god Apollo.
Terminating on a downswept, shaped square base, the detailed carving has a naturally aged finish yet still remains striking. The natural patina brings out the hues of sandstone ranging from brown, red, purple, and pink. For this reason it is and is also commonly called brownstone.
