Pair 19th Century cast iron garden griffins in the seated position. The griffin is a mythical beast having the head, wings and claws of an eagle and the body of a lion, whose combined symbolism represents both courage and watchfulness. Giving the impression of terracotta this pair are cast iron and are of the highly appealing Italian style incorporating bold shapes and simple lines. Circa 1880
