Item Description

Early 19th Century Regency pair of 'lyre' fronted library chairs in the manner of Gillows of Lancaster and London, the shaped back raised over outscrolling arm with carved flower head terminal supported on lyre shaped mahogany frame with barley twist and moulded detail terminating on fluted turned front leg and outswept back leg with brass casters.

This Gillows pattern chair relates to 'Easy Chairs' supplied by Gillows of London and Lancaster for Hackwood Park, Basingstoke, Hampshire and listed in their 1813 Memorandum. Related chairs also feature in a number of Gillow's early 19th Century room elevations preserved at the Victoria and Albert Museum (E.47-1952).
