Item Description

18th Century George III green painted salon armchair attributed to Thomas Chippendale, covered with later damask fabric, the moulded scroll armrests above a serpentine seat and fluted frieze, on turned tapering fluted legs, the seat rails with distinctive slots that Chippendale used for cramps and holes where battons were screwed during transit.  See Christopher Gilbert, ‘The Life and Works of Thomas Chippendale', pp.112-113, pl. 195-196, for images of the underside of a Chippendale chair, showing the cut-out cramp marks.
